INTRODUCTION The present catalogue of the Family Eurybrachidae forms Part 18 of Fascicle IV of the General Catalogue of the Homoptera of the World which is devoted to the Superfamily Fulgoroidea. This was virtually com- plete at the time of the death of Dr. Z. P. Metcalf on January 5, 1956. It was completed with the aid of Miss Virginia Wade, Research Analyst, who has been working with Dr. Metcalf for the past seven years, and the technical advice of Drs. David A. Young, Jr. and Paul W. Oman of the Entomology Research Branch, Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture. The catalogue of the remaining fulgoroid families and of the Cicadellidae is practically complete to the end of 1955 and we plan to publish these re- maining portions under Dr. Metcalf’s authorship. Since the fulgoroid catalogues began to appear in print several changes have occurred in the classification of higher categories. One of the changes, the establishment of the Family Gengidae, can be covered more readily in this than in any of the remaining unpublished portions of the Fulgoroidea catalogue. The writings of Fennah (Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. (12) 2 : 111-120, 1949) and of China and Fennah (ibid. 5: 190-199, 1952) have been heavily drawn upon for the following summaries of family characteristics. The Family Gengidae may be characterized as follows: Head with vertex triangular, slightly depressed; beak with subapical segment much longer than apical; antennae with third joint minute. Mesonotum short, disc de- pressed; tegulae small, partly overlapped by pronotum; forewings tapering apieally beginning at claval apex, basal cell small or larger and ovate, principal veins strongly carinate; hind wings reduced. Hind leg with trochanter rotating laterad in horizonal plane; tibia trispinose laterally and with five spines apieally, basal tarsomere not inflated, as long as second and third tarsomeres combined, with five apical spines; second tarsomere without apical spines. Abdomen dorsoventrally flattened, with lateral sclerites. Included are two species in two genera. The Gengidae are known only from Africa. The Family Eurybrachidae is characterized as follows: Head with width of vertex three times length, or more; width of head including eyes equal to or exceeding width of pronotum; front wider than long with lateral mar- gins normally angulate near middle; elypeus usually not carinate; antennal flagellum unsegmented. Mesonotum short, broadly triangular; tegulae moderately large to large, not or only slightly overlapped by pronotum; forewings not steeply tectiform, costal and commissural margins not or only weakly divergent, apical margin not oblique, or if so, then with sutural iii IV Introduction angle more prominent than apical angle, basal cell usually small; costal area absent or present and either with oblique cross-veins or none. Hind leg with trochanter movable in plane transverse to long axis of body; 8-10 spines apically on tibia; basal tarsomere longer than second plus third, inflated or with more than five teeth apically; second tarsomere with apex rounded or bluntly pointed, without any spines. Abdomen broad, dorso- ventrally flattened, spiracles small. Female with either the anal segment or the third valvulae of the ovipositor usually wax-bearing. Included are 173 species in 31 genera. The species are predominantly Australian, Oriental, and Ethiopian. Six species are Paleartic, one Neotropical, two are without known localities, and four are known from two or more regions. The known geographic distribution of each species is indicated by superscript figures at the end of the lines, which correspond to geographic regions designated by the same superscript figures. In general we have indicated the distribution as given by the author of the reference, using the country as the smallest unit except in the larger countries, where states and provinces are used as the smallest units. In the larger island groups the individual islands are indicated wherever possible, in view of the importance of island endemism. THE PURPOSES TO BE SERVED BY A CATALOGUE OF INSECTS A catalogue of animals should serve practically all fields of biology. It should be, therefore, as complete a listing of all the records of families, subfamilies, tribes, genera, species, and varietes as it is possible for the author to assemble. The nature of the reference is of the greatest impor- tance. A student of zoogeography should be able to find a complete list of the regions inhabited by the various species. The student of ecology should be able to find references to all that is known about the life history, food plants, and other pertinent data. The student of economic entomology should be able to check the histories of those species that are suspected of being injurious to plants. The plant disease specialist should be able to check the current nomenclature of the species which are disease vectors or suspected of being disease vectors. Those research workers studying morphology, physiology, or genetics should be able to trace the develop- ment in the field of their special interest. And lastly, the student of tax- onomy should be relieved of the burden of searching for past recordings, and the journals which publish taxonomic papers should not have to pay the cost of publishing the past records and duplicating the synonymy that is already Avell known. Thus it would be necessary only to record synonymy which has been developed since the publication of the catalogue. Inci- dentally, we are pleased to note an increase in the method of literature cita- cm 1 SciELO 10 11 12 13 14 15 Introduction v tions developed in Metcalf’s Bibliography of the Homoptera Auchenorhyneha. Thus Smith 1950a: 63 is a better method of citation than the present method: Smith, Aim. Mag. Nat. Hist (12) 5: 63. Unfortunately this method was not adopted in the earlier numbers of this series and since about three-fourths of the catalogues are in manu- script, it was not deemed wise to make this change at this time. FORM OF THE PRESENT CATALOGUE This catalogue follows the general form of the present series. The family is divided into genera which are arranged in as nearly a phylogenetic order as our present knowledge will permit. The species are arranged under the genera in alphabetic sequence. Titles of books are not abbreviated but are condensed if they are unduly long. The abbreviations of journal references follow in general the scheme proposed in the World List of Scientific Pe- riodicals with minor exceptions, the chief difference being that the names of countries, states, cities and other geographical units are not abbreviated. A few references are listed under their titles rather than under the ab- breviations of the journals in which they were published, because in these cases the titles are usually better known than the journals, for example, Van Duzee 1917 Catalogue of Hemiptera of America North of Mexico not Techn. Bull. California Agr. Exp. Sta. Ent. 2. If the journal has been published in series the abbreviation of the journal is followed by a series number or by such an abbreviation as n. s. (new series), o. s. (old series), n. f. (neue Folge), or the like. This is followed by a note indicating the nature of the reference. The notes which follow the references are generally self explanatory, but three points may be mentioned here. Such notations as “[described],” “[notes],” “[key],” and the like are intended to be suggestive rather than precise or exclusive. The notation “[error]” means not accepted in this catalogue. Usually the latest published synonymy is accepted, but not always. The other notation “[comparative note]” is used to designate those references, often of the greatest taxonomic significance, in which two generic, specific or other groups are compared. All references have been checked against the original save those marked with an asterisk (*), which have been accepted from reliable sources. Every effort has been made to have the references full and complete and to give an indication of the character of the data contained. Where the writer knows that reprints have been issued with different pagination, this is indicated in parentheses following the page numbers of the original. In a few cases, where the matter has been reprinted under a different title with different pagination, separate references are given. Where authentic editions have been published these have been indicated by separate references. Genera established without VI Introduction included species have been dated from their original description, with their type fixation dated at the time of the first inclusion of species. Original spellings have been retained in all cases, except obvious typographical errors. Typographical errors are indicated by placing “[sic]” after the mis- spelled name. This is not for the purpose of calling attention to the mistakes authors have made but to make certain that students following the cata- logue have a clear understanding of what is implied. The determination of obvious typographical errors is not always easy. These errors range all the way from clearly apparent transpositions of letters, to misspelled names of individuals, geographical names, and many others of like character. However, so many generic names have been formed by the transposition and substitution of letters that one is often at a loss to know which names are misspelled and which are not. For example, Ncokolla and Keonolla, or Alebra, Elabra, and Eualebra. All variations in spelling save those which refer to endings only, are appropriately cross-referred. The species have also been listed under every known generic combination so that it is possible to find any species with- out recourse to the index, which will be published at the completion of the Fascicle, together with the full bibliography. The writer takes no pride in the authorship of nomina nova. He uses them only when he thinks they are necessary. No new names are proposed for species or genera described by living authors without first giving the original author an opportunity to correct primary or secondary homonyms. A catalogue is not a revision of a group and the location of the genera and species in the present catalogue is merely an attempt to reflect what is believed to be the general consensus of the best authorities at the present time. Doubtful genera and species have been included to call them to the attention of subsequent revisers. An attempt has been made throughout this catalogue to interpret all references in the fight of the period in which they were published. This is not always easy and leads perhaps to erroneous conclusions at times, but it is certainly much sounder from the standpoint of nomenclature than the tendency to evaluate references from previous decades in the fight of present day practices and procedures. In the present number of this series we have departed from our previous method of giving latinized names to varieties which in the past have been designated by Arabic letters, Greek letters, numbers, or other designa- tions. All varieties are catalogued, however, under the first designation regardless of its form. Some of these varieties may prove to be valid species with further study and then may be given latinized designations. Primary homonyms of species have been replaced by nomina nova-, secondary homonyms have been restored to then - original names if the cm 1 SciELO 10 11 12 13 14 15 Introduction vii homonym has been relieved by moving one or the other or both species to other genera. All specific endings have been modified to agree with the suggestions made by Blackwelder 1940, Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences 31 : 135-140. There are certain disadvantages inherent in this method, but it seems to the writer that these limitations are outweighed by the ad- vantages of this system. We are confronted by so many coined words that, can have no sex that it seems better to use this system and disregard ap- parent violations of Latin and Greek grammar. Where the sex of generic names can be determined the appropriate adjustments are made in the specific names. In a detailed catalogue such as this it is practically impossible to eliminate all errors. We will appreciate it very much if our attention is directed to all such mistakes. It is especially easy to overlook local lists when published in the proceedings of local natural history societies, references to species of economic importance when published in scientific agricultural journals, references to vectors of plant diseases when published in phytopathological journals, and many other references of a similar nature. It will be very much appreciated if authors will send us reprints of all articles dealing with the Homoptera. Also it would seem that changes in the nomenclature adopted in this catalogue should not be made in the future without a full explanation. All literature available to the writer before December 31, 1955 has been included in this catalogue. Z. P. Metcalf and Clyde F.
