INTRODUCTORY NOTE.

The present work has been prepared with the object of supplement- ing the " Repertorium Bibliographicum " of Hain, and is divided into two parts, as follows :

The First Part, now published, deals with nearly 7000 books mentioned by Hain, but imperfectly or inaccurately collated ; supplying in some cases collations, and in others deficiencies where collations have been given, as, for instance, specifying the collation by signatures whether the signatures are printed or not.*

Campbell's "Annales de la Typographic N^erlandaise au xv« Siecle" and his four Supplements have been gone through, and such works as are mentioned by Hain, amounting to nearly 800, placed under his number. It wiil be found that, if a work is in the Royal Library at the Hague, Campbell does not refer to Hain, even when the work is to be found in the Repertorium. Where Hain has not collated the work, or done so imperfectly, then the collation of Campbell is given, but the descriptive part of the volume is not reproduced, as it has been thought unnecessary to practically reprint an inexpensive volume which must be in the hands of every bibliographer.

Part II. of Holtrop's " Catalogus Librorum Saeculo xv impres- sorum quotquot in Bibliotheca Regia Hagana asservantur" (Hagae Comitum, 1856), has been dealt with in a similar way to Campbell, except that the description, when not in Hain, is reproduced, the

* Hain seems to have altered bis mode of collation during the progress of his work, and in later collations to have marked whether the work contained catch- words and numbered leaves. It is not likely he followed an uncertain rule and specified these in some cases and not in others. It is true his earlier collations might have been the fuller and the later the curtailed ones, but this is not probable when we consider the natural effect of experience gained in the progress of the work.

vi SUPPLEMENT TO HAIN'S REPERTORIUM.

intention being that besides the present volume, Campbell only need be consulted to supplement Hain.

Brunet, in his work " La France Litt^raire au xv° Sibcle " (Paris, 1865), mentions 754 editions, of which 269 only are specified by Hain. Where he gives information not found in Hain, in regard to these 269 editions, this is incorporated.

The catalogue of the British Museum, including not only what is at present printed, but also that portion which is still in MS., has been gone through, the British Museum authorities having kindly permitted the author the use of the MS. slips, in order that his work might be as complete as possible. He has also to thank the liberality of the last-mentioned authorities for the use of the catalogue of "Accessions," so that every 15th century book in the British Museum up to the end of 1893 will be found to be noticed. Where the entry in the Catalogue of the British Museum has given particulars as to signatures, lines, leaves, and so forth not given by Hain, or differing from the particulars given by him, these have been extracted and placed under Hain's number. An additional table in the addenda contains a list of those numbers which are in the British Museum but which are not included in the present work : it will thus be easy to discover whether any book mentioned by Hain is in the library of the British Museum.

The principle adopted in referring to variations from Hain's descriptions is this, that where Hain has seen the volume, then the variation (except only in the case of blank leaves, which he does not attempt as «, rule to enumerate, or where the present author has seen the work and verified the difference) is inserted not by way of substantial entry, but incidentally only after the authority cited. Thus: B. M., C. 90. g. (28 1., so ff. not 47 ff.). Where Hain has not seen the book, then the description given by the person who has seen the book is inserted by way of substantial entry. Care has been taken to give such information only as does not appear in the Repertorium. Where it has been necessary to add other matter to Hain's description, then, after giving the additional particulars, a reference has been inserted to the works where the particular book is mentioned. Where the entry in the British Museum catalogue cannot be identified with any edition mentioned by Hain, then the catalogue slip has been taken out (the press-mark being given) to form Part H. of the present work.

The Mazarine, Sainte Genevifeve, Dijon, Versailles, Toulouse, D'Albi, Besangon, Lyon, and a few other catalogues have been

INTRODUCTORY NOTE. vii

dealt with in the same manner as the British Museum Catalogue, and a considerable number of booksellers' catalogues have been put under contribution and dealt with on the same lines. Amongst others may be mentioned those of Rosenthal of Munich, Cohn of Berlin, Olschki of Venice, Hoepli of Milan, Quaritch, etc.

As to the method adopted, Hain's abbreviations and method generally have been followed. The collation regarded as correct has been placed first, and then the authorities, any variation from the collation given being specified in parenthesis following their names. The references are given in the order in which information given is acquired, the main reference being first. The order subsequent to this is alphabetical, but, to facilitate reference, libraries are placed together and authors together. The press-mark of the British Museum copy is always given when the work is not in Hain, but when the work is to be found in Hain, this is not invariably done. The fact is that when the present work was first taken in hand, the author understood these press-marks were to be altered in the British Museum Catalogue, and it was not until a portion of the work had been completed that he decided to give the press-mark even in those cases where the work is described by Hain.

The Second Part of the work consists of editions not enumerated or referred to by Hain in his " Repertorium.'' Here will be found noted the works specified by Holtrop and Campbell and not in Hain, those specified by Brunet in the work of his before referred to, in the British Museum, or the catalogues mentioned above, and not men- tioned by Hain, besides about a thousand discovered from other sources, making a total of nearly 6000 works not enumerated by Hain.

The books mentioned by Hain, including twelve additional in the Addenda, amount to 16311. As in Part II. of the present work 5700 and odd works more are enumerated, Hain seems to have missed one in every four. The number of Incunabula now known is increased to over 22,000, and it is possible that when certain sources of information not yet drawn on have been exhausted the number of works printed before 1500 may ultimately be found to fall not far short of 30,000 or nearly twice the number of those to be found in the " Repertorium Bibliographicum " of Hain.

As to the order of collation itself, some definite scientific order and method should be adopted; and it is considered that the following is the best : ist, the author's name ; 2nd, the title ; 3rd, the place where printed; 4th, the name of printer; sth, date ;

viii SUPPLEMENT TO HAIN'S REPERTORIUM.

6th, size; 7th, character or type; 8th, signatures; 9th, whether with or without catchwords or foliation; loth, number of columns; nth, number of hnes; 12th, number of leaves. Then should follow the transcript of the commencement of the work and the colophon or subscription, and finally should come the authority. It does not seem necessary to say "sine" anything where a statement by way of surmise is put in brackets, as this assumes that the particulars in question do not appear in the book ; but where such particulars cannot be surmised with any degree of certainty, then if the place be wanting say s. 1. ; if the printer's name, s. t. n. ; if the date, s. a. ; if the place and printer's name should be wanting, s. 1. et t. n. ; if the place and date, s. 1. et a. ; if the printer's name and date only, s. t. n. et a. ; if all three be absent sine notd,. The above order has only been departed from in the cases of works in the British Museum, where there seemed to be an advantage (no titles properly speaking being usually given) in following the order of the catalogue, and practically reproducing the catalogue slip in this respect.

The cataloguers of the Mazarine Incunabula have adopted the true and only proper order in the order of collation, but unfor- tunately in the large majority of cases have left out the particulars, and the descriptive portion of the works collated is far too vague.

The catalogue D'Albi and the Dijon catalogue are printed with- out specifying what the contractions used in the originals are the words being printed in full, the omitted letters being printed in italics. The collations in the present work taken from these two catalogues are not many, and in those cases where the contractions are not sufficiently certain to justify the originals being restored, the description is given at length, with a note that contractions have not been employed.

The author would like here to draw attention to one remarkable catalogue, the last issued in France, namely, the " Catalogue des Incunables de la Bibliothfeque Publique de Besangon, par Auguste Castan," published in 1893, with a preface by Monsieur L. Delisle. This catalogue (though it cannot be commended on the ground of order of collation) is, taking all things into consideration, the most valuable catalogue we have yet been privileged to see. It is of a thoroughly practical nature, and such as could only be produced by one with a life's experience of the requirements of the bibliographer and the importance of those minute particulars which appear to the inexperienced so unnecessary.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE. ix

As to the sequence of editions of any particular work con- tained in Part II., it will be remembered that Hain does not arrange the editions without date in any particular order, but puts them all together before the dated editions. He then follows with the dated editions in order of date. Campbell, on the other hand, arranges dated and undated editions together, assigning an imaginary date to those which bear none.

The consequence is, that where one has to search for a work without a date in Hain, he has to go through all the undated editions, and where the search has to be made in Campbell, through both undated and dated editions. Both of these principles of arrange- ment seem to be defective, arbitrary, and confusing. Some definite arrangement should be adopted which will of itself have the effect of arranging the undated editions in their most probable order. The order which experience suggests as best for reference is this : The Hnes being the best guide in early printed books, let the order of undated editions be determined mostly by these. The smaller number of lines and the larger number of leaves will probably mark the earlier edition. The order, therefore, which has been adopted is as follows :

1. All undated editions in the following order :

(a) Those in which the leaves and lines are not recorded.

{b) Those in which the leaves only are recorded, placing the edition with the larger number of leaves first.

(c) Those in which the lines are recorded, arranging the lesser number of lines first.

{d) Where the number of lines is the same in more than one edition, then those of such editions in which the number of leaves is greater, first.

2. All dated editions in order of date.

What has been attempted in Part II. is to indicate the existence of Incunabula not mentioned by Hain, and to supply just that information which must be forthcoming before the actual collating of the works can be taken in hand. In a large number of instances collations are given, but this is not the professed object of this work, which may perhaps best be described as a catalogue on an extended scale, with Bibliographical particulars. It is intended to be merely introductory to something better rather to indicate the sources of information than to give the actual collations which must subsequently be made.

In Part II. it has been thought best, where works are mentioned

X SUPPLEMENT TO HAIN S REPERTORIUM.

by Hain of which new editions have been discovered, to arrange the works in the same order as arranged in Hain, all works not mentioned by him coming last. This may seem a small matter, but it must be remembered that the very smallest matter in the method of a book of reference is of importance.

The Author has to thank Mr. F. Jenkinson, the Cambridge University librarian, for many collations, especially of works in the University Library, and for his invaluable aid in reading the proof sheets. It would be impossible to define the extent of his generous assistance. The Author has thus been enabled to incorporate some specimens of the method of collation adopted by that great biblio- grapher, the late Mr. Bradshaw, whose experience led him to attach special importance to a clear indication of the structure of a volume. A collation he held should as far as possible enable the reader to reconstruct for himself the volume described.

The Author also takes this opportunity of thanking Dr. Young, of the Hunterian Library, Glasgow, for allowing his descriptions of fifteenth century books in that library to be used in the latter portion of Part L

Dr. Konrad Burger has most kindly undertaken to prepare the index under printers and presses of both the present volume and its companion, on the lines of his well-known and valuable index to Hain, and will, as Part IL passes through the press, insert therein additions from his own vast store.

The most pleasing feature in the preparation of the present work has been the lively sympathy and encouragement the author has during his labours met with in all parts of Europe, and not least from that country which has the honour of counting amongst its subjects the Editor of the " Monumenta Germaniae et Italiae Typographica."
